It is patur as you wrote at the end, also because of makom kedusha, but I wrote the iykar patur as a petach she'aino ragil, even according to the minhag that we put mezuzos on a shul.
השבמחקA aron kodesh cannot be considered otzarot since it is not tzarchei dira, and iykar svara of otzarot is because the room is part and used also as a dira itself, and that is impossible to say in regard to an aron kodesh.
